In Part 1 of this series, we introduced the concept of The Dark Data Discovery League, which includes four personas that illustrate how people across a firm respond to the challenges of unstructured data. Now, in Part 2, we’ll focus on our first hero: the Vigilante.

The Vigilante is a driven professional who thrives on getting work done and keeping the focus on results, not on the firm’s internal processes and governance requirements. Their attention is squarely on serving clients, meeting deadlines, and keeping work moving forward. Processes and rules that feel like roadblocks often take a back seat, not out of disregard, but because the Vigilante is laser-focused on outcomes. In practice, Vigilantes might:

    • Save sensitive client files to personal drives for quick access
    • Spin up unsanctioned collaboration tools to meet deadlines
    • Keep multiple versions of contracts or pleadings on desktops
    • Trust governance and compliance teams to “clean things up” later

These actions are rarely malicious. Vigilantes just want to succeed in their roles. However, their shortcuts can create blind spots (i.e., hidden data stores, security gaps, and unnecessary exposure for the firm).

Vigilantes succeed when governance supports them. With clear, supportive information governance in place, they can focus on client service and strategic outcomes without fear of risking the firm. Instead of being hindered by guardrails, they are strengthened by them.

The path to Zero Dark Data isn’t about forcing Vigilantes to care about compliance. It’s about creating a safety net that safeguards their work while protecting the firm. With the right balance of freedom and oversight, Vigilantes can continue doing what they do best—delivering results—without creating avoidable risks.

In Part 3, we’ll explore a very different hero: the Mastermind. This character is the underrepresented voice who sees the risks clearly but often struggles to be heard.
