Creating Meaningful Content Overviews

As part of search:

The idea of displaying document summaries as part of search results is far from revolutionary. Most search technologies produce summaries by grabbing the first paragraph of a document. Others will display highlighted keywords within virtually unintelligible sentence fragments. This is technically referred to as summarization but does it actually assist the user in quickly obtaining an accurate overview of document content? Users will often have to read-through an entire document only to determine that it's irrelevant to their search.

As part of a separate system:

Some enterprises approach the problem of providing abstracts/summaries by hiring additional personnel to manually scan entire documents and write summaries. This process is incredibly expensive and time consuming. For a number of applications an automatically created summary will be sufficient.
