Dynamic Link Injection
Weaving your Web of Information
Part of the user’s information navigation experience is provided by hyperlinks from a page to other pages of relevant information.
Active Navigation’s approach to hyperlinking is profoundly different because links are not stored in the web page but the links are injected on the fly into documents as they are served to the user’s browser.
Traditional methods impose a rigid structure on how people are able to navigate information irrespective of the needs of the reader. The Active Navigation approach puts your users in control. Separate sets of links can be presented which you can tailor to an individual’s needs. This means that you can let the user discover one of their own numerous routes through the same information which can reflect their interests, navigational or learning styles or you can prescribe a set navigational path through critical information to ensure that a user navigates along a chosen route (to ensure coverage). Each link can target multiple documents rather than the 1-to-1 links of standard HTML.
Different levels of links may also be injected on a subscription basis for each type of user. For example, a publishing house can offer a subscription service so that different levels of subscription entitle a user to varying levels of link injection and navigational features; the higher the subscription, the greater the degree of link injection and navigational tools are on offer.
Traditional methods of creating hyperlinks mean that an author has to manually insert links into documents; this is time consuming and resource intensive. Because Active Navigation links are not hard coded in the original documents, the Web Author does not have to modify these documents. Link maintenance, as a result, is drastically reduced and links can be maintained by the system on a scheduled automated basis.
