Creating structure out of chaos

Active Navigation can be used to create a new taxonomy or to complement an existing taxonomy.

Active Navigation's categorization feature has typically been deployed to build structures that reflect the content. The Active Navigation approach can result in taxonomies being built within a fraction of the time taken using traditional approaches.

taxonomyNo training sets are required – Subject Matter Experts (SME's) review the results of the theme extraction process and are then able to build a structure (using a suite of tools developed by Active Navigation for this purpose) that enables users to find relevant information quickly and efficiently.

This approach is not manually intensive, as new nodes need to be added a label can be created and that node will automatically be populated not just with new content but also with historical content that has been themed. No retraining/retheming of the system is required in order to recognize these new nodes.

If an organization already has a taxonomy in place this information can be used by Active Navigation to build and maintain indexes and navigation structures that reflect this taxonomy.

The benefits of using this approach are:

  • Business rules can be adhered to.
  • Categorization is semi-automatic, significantly reducing the massive overhead required to maintain a complete taxonomy.
  • There is organization control over how information is presented: Active Navigation is not a “black box” nor does it have to perform automatic categorization.

The Active Navigation category structures are XML based – ensuring that these structures can be repurposed by other systems if required.
